A family-owned business, Cabrera’s prides itself in offering various Mexican dishes from the different Mexican states. Some restaurants offer food in just one style, and with every Mexican state offering a different style, Cabrera’s food offerings are “incorporated from different states of Mexico,” says Bernardo Godoy, manager of Cabrera’s.

Founded by Manuel Cabrera in 1985, the restaurant had been passed along to his cousin Efrain Cabrera, who then managed the restaurant successfully enough to open the Pasadena branch 12 years ago, then the Duarte branch 10 years ago.

Though there are a number of Mexican restaurants that offer the same menu, what sets Cabrera’s apart is that its food are all freshly made, in-house. “We have Mole, which is a chocolate sauce with different kinds of chili. It is really elaborate, a sauce that takes hours to make and we make it from scratch,” says Godoy.

Godoy adds that the other restaurants that offer Mole, use a paste that can be bought in stores. But with Cabrera’s, all food products in its menu, even the sauce, is made entirely in-house from the freshest ingredients.

Though Cabrera’s has its own bar, the restaurant also has a kids’ menu to make it a complete family restaurant. “The kids are always welcome,” says Godoy, and unlike other Mexican restaurants where the kid’s menu is somewhat expensive, Cabrera’s keep the prices low to encourage “people to bring their kids,” says Godoy.

The bar is located in one corner of the restaurant which is “kind of like secluded from the whole restaurant because we want the restaurant to have a family ambience,” Godoy explains.

Additionally, Godoy says, “we’re doing a lot of entertainment. We do Salsa on Thursdays. We also do Karaoke Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.”

A family-restaurant through and through (Godoy says he is one of the few employees who are not members of the family), Cabrera’s is a true family restaurant that has something for everyone.

Cabrera’s is located at 655 N Lake Ave. Other locations are at 625 E Live Oak Ave., Arcadia and 1856 Huntington Dr. Duarte.
