Sequoyah School Honors the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year, January 17th marks the federal recognition of the January 15, 1929 birthday of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His legacy encompasses influential decisions, monumental actions and steadfast progressions of humanitarian rights that reach far beyond the civil rights movement of his era. His legacy has inspired people of all identities to speak up and make change across generations.

Dr. King always chose courage and determination when fighting for civil rights in the face of oppression, racism, and violence. He stood beside his goal of achieving rights for all people through strategic, intentional protests and political action. By emboldening people across the nation to fight against racial segregation, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, which led to a series of legislative acts and policy changes that addressed institutional inequality for many Americans for the first time.

While Dr. King and other leaders generated momentous strides for equality, the push for equity and human/civil rights remains a preeminent challenge today. “At Sequoyah we honor the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by celebrating the human dignity of all people and continuously striving for justice and equity in all facets of our school.”
