Maranatha Science Club SeaPerch Teams Wins Seven Trophies in LA Regional Underwater Robotics Competition
Maranatha High School congratulates its SeaPerch team who won seven trophies over the weekend! The Maranatha Science Club SeaPerch Underwater Robot Teams participated in the 2020 Los Angeles Regional SeaPerch Underwater Robotics competition on Saturday, February 29, and won seven trophies ranging from 1st Place to 3rd Place.
Maranatha SeaPerch teams consist of: Team A – seniors Ethan Coe-Renner (Captain), Samantha Wu, David Minassian, sophomore Isaac Lee, and junior Neo Mao; Team B – sophomore Dorothy Chen (Captain), and juniors John Zhang, Joshua Kim, Allison Chang, and Peter Otoshi. Coached by Maranatha Science Chair Mr. Dan Newkirk and Physics teacher Mr. Nathan Spear, and organized by Maranatha parent volunteers Dr. Shouhua Huang of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Mr. Jacky Chen (Dorothy Chen’s dad), and Mr. Ethan Lee (Isaac Lee’s dad), and supported by the Coe-Renner family, the two teams practiced hard under a short time schedule, with excellent results, and received the following recognitions and trophies:

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. The SeaPerch Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV while learning engineering concepts, problem-solving, teamwork, and technical applications.
