PEF: Decoding the Game Theory Behind Classroom Play

“We’ve all played games, but do you know the science behind them? This is the central question educator John Pointer and his students answer daily during the Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) Summer Enrichment Program. Rather than spending their summer mornings reviewing traditional textbooks, students in Pointer’s classroom are actively exploring the different mechanics behind some of the most common games in the world.

The unique course transforms popular tabletop and card games into interactive lessons for structural logic and mathematical probability. Throughout the program, students work diligently on sharpening their critical thinking skills by breaking down what makes a game function, discussing optimal board game strategies, and learning the statistical math behind poker.

By pulling back the curtain on probability and risk management, the young learners are taught how to evaluate complex systems and predict numerical outcomes. Armed with this deeper understanding of game mechanics, the students are developing real-world problem-solving models that extend far beyond casual play.

As the summer session continues, these local students are gaining the confidence to approach challenging situations analytically—ensuring they are ready to make winning decisions every time.
