Service Learning and Leadership at Clairbourn

Civic engagement is an important component of a private school education, and at Clairbourn, citizenship is one of the values in our Code of Ethics. Beginning in preschool, students actively participate in thoughtfully organized, age-appropriate service activities that teach civic responsibility, leadership, and community assistance.

A Comprehensive Approach

At the core of the Service Learning Program is a spirit of grateful awareness for the blessings in our lives combined with a heart of service that puts into practice the ability to do good for others. Clairbourn’s mission statement is “Creating Scholars and Leaders with Heart,” and service and leadership work are key elements of that mission.

This includes opportunities to serve on the Middle School Student Council as well as to participate in classroom-based activities that across every grade go beyond simple volunteerism. Through instruction, discussion, guided participation, reflection, and even hands-on projects that could involve face-to-face interaction with those who receive the service, students experience a wider-view of their place in the world and discover how they can make a difference.

One important characteristic of Clairbourn’s service learning program is the ability of even young students to make thoughtful decisions that have real results. Many projects come from ideas suggested by students who have seen or heard of a need and want to work with classmates to respond to it.
