Shelter, Story, and Craft: A Grade 3 Waldorf Tradition

The third grade Shelter Block at Pasadena Waldorf School is a cherished experience and lasting memory for many Waldorf students and their families. During this immersive unit, Grade 3 students explored shelters and dwellings built by Indigenous peoples of North America and cultures around the world, gaining an appreciation for how communities adapt to their environments. Students then researched and designed their own shelter projects, thoughtfully considering materials, purpose, and structure.

Using similar natural materials, they created miniature shelters and worked on their projects at school with limited adult assistance, fostering independence, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The process emphasized patience, craftsmanship, and pride in one’s work. The unit culminated in the Grade 3 Shelter Project Faire, where students enthusiastically shared their finished creations with the wider school community, celebrating both their learning and accomplishments.
