Sierra Madre Middle School Cross Country Team Returns to Compete in the 210 League this Fall

Sierra Madre Middle School (SMMS) is excited to announce that its Cross Country team is returning this fall to compete in the 210 League with 7 other schools!

SMMS will have 4 teams (Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys and Girls teams) that will each be racing in two meets. The races will be 1.5 miles long on a fairly flat course (likely at Lacy park).

Everyone will get a chance to race and all are welcome regardless of previous experience! If you’re playing other sports in the fall, cross country is a great way to build endurance and speed to help with them too. It’s also just fun to run with your friends!

The team will practice twice a week before school. We will meet at 7:30am on the SMMS field Tuesdays and Thursdays for a bit of running and drills before school. There will often be some sort of food like bagels/donuts for the kids to eat after running since they will likely work up an appetite.

Coach
The volunteer parent coach this year will be Adam Wierman. Adam’s daughter Rebecca is a 6th grader. He is a Professor at Caltech in Computer Science and ran track and cross country in college, captaining the team to DIII nationals.

Important Dates
First practice: Tue Aug 30 @ 7:30 at the SMMS field. (If you are interested but can’t make this first practice, don’t worry. Just let Coach Wierman know!)
Regular Practices: Tue/Thu 7:30am at the SMMS field. (Note that we may occasionally run on neighborhood roads in addition to on the field.)
Races: Oct 6 & Nov 10.

SMMS will also look into finding a local 5k that “we can do as a team for fun to wrap up the season. Maybe the Rose Bowl Turkey Trot.”

Parent Volunteering
If you are interested in volunteering to help coach or help in any other way (e.g. bringing bagels/donuts for after practice or snacks for after the meets) please let us know in the form below! Any/all help is appreciated!

If you have questions about the team, please reach out to Coach Wierman at adamwierman@gmail.com.
