St. Philip the Apostle School Added to List of Pasadena Schools Cleared to Reopen for PreK-2nd Grade Instruction

Other schools with waivers approved by the city Health Department include High Point Academy, Sequoyah School, and Chandler School

St. Philip the Apostle School is the latest local school to have its waiver to continue teaching some students approved by the Pasadena Health Department, according to the city’s website.

The Catholic school joins High Point Academy, Sequoyah School, and Chandler School as other Pasadena schools approved to partially reopen.

“Your waiver application has been approved by both the Pasadena Public Health Department and the California Department of Public Health. This waiver allows in-person instruction for grades PreK-2nd (grade) at your institution, as applicable, in compliance with your application and reopening plan as submitted,” stated the notice.

City Health Director Dr. Ying-Ying Goh said last month that more than 40 local schools are eligible for waivers.

According to the city’s website, there are 17 schools eligible to submit waivers in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD).

In Pasadena, school waiver application components have been posted for two months to allow schools to prepare for reopening. Health Department officials have been visiting local schools to provide hands-on consulting.

“We expect to maintain an ongoing conversation with schools that have reopened under the waiver process, so that we may continue to provide technical assistance and support,” Goh said in her letter to St. Philip the Apostle School.

Although this is progress, all four schools could be forced to close their doors again in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak.
