Washington Elementary – From Seed to STEM

Students at Washington Elementary STEM Magnet participate in the gardening process, from soil preparation to planting, tending, and harvesting of plants. While engaging in the various gardening activities, the students are reinforcing and building upon the knowledge from their classroom lessons. So far this year, students are:

• Researching soil qualities to determine which plants need to be planted.
• Researching the best season to plant seeds for optimal plant growth.
• Measuring the proper depth required to support a plant’s root structure.
• Calculating the area needed for the bed of each type of plant.

In addition, students are becoming environmentally aware and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
