Ridwell, a sustainability startup that recently launched in Los Angeles but was originally founded in 2018 near Seattle, is expanding its doorstep pickup service for hard-to-recycle items to Pasadena this week, just in time for Earth Day on April 22. The company aims to make it easier for environmentally-conscious residents to reduce their waste and improve their environmental impact.

“As we celebrate Earth Month, Ridwell’s arrival in Pasadena is perfectly timed to help residents divert more waste from landfills and oceans,” said Ryan Metzger, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Ridwell. “We’re proud to offer a solution that makes it easy for forward-thinking communities to drive real change and waste less at the household level.”

Ridwell offers biweekly pickups of items that are not accepted by regular curbside recycling programs, such as batteries, light bulbs, plastic film, and textiles. For a monthly subscription starting at $14, members receive a metal bin and reusable cloth bags to sort their recyclables. The company then collects the items and brings them to over 200 carefully vetted partners who can responsibly recycle or reuse them, including local Los Angeles company ByFusion.

This service fills a critical gap in recycling options, as many of these materials often end up in landfills or incinerators when not properly disposed of. To date, Ridwell’s 90,000-plus members have diverted more than 22 million pounds of waste from landfills.

In addition to its recycling efforts, Ridwell also facilitates pickups for items needed by local nonprofits, such as Baby2Baby, Downtown Women’s Center, Project Ropa, and Wags & Walks, empowering communities to help each other.
