What We’re Driving | Volkswagen’s ID.4 AWD Pro S: All-New Built From Scratch Electric Vehicle

My first foray with an EV was not a pleasant one. It was a number of years ago and gave weight to the term “Range Anxiety”. The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S was a whole different beast. With an estimated range between 240 and 260 miles, I drove the whole week without charging the car at all, and no Range Anxiety!

The ID.4 is an all-new small, electric SUV that seats five. The ID.4 is not just an existing car (like the Golf) equipped with an all electric powertrain. It’s a start from the beginning, newly engineered EV.

Powered by an 82-kWh battery, the ID.4 is available in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. My test model was equipped with all-wheel drive which produced 302 horses. This car really glided along the road. You can get a full charge on the car at 220 volts, basically overnight.

There are three trim levels to choose from: Pro, Pro S and 1st Edition. This review will focus on the Pro S trim.

With LED adaptive headlights, panoramic sunroof, 12-inch touchscreen, power tailgate with hands-free open and close functions, massaging front seats and simulated leather upholstery, there is plenty to like on the Pro S model ID.4.

The ID.4 is graced with a roomy cabin that is easy to enter and exit. Seating is comfortable and the cabin is relatively quiet. An interesting addition to the ID.4 equipment is that the car automatically started when I entered. It was a little disconcerting at first, but once I got used to it, I really liked it. Just get in and go!

Not only does the ID.4 accommodate five passengers comfortably, it also provides plenty of space for stuff; 30.3 cubics with the 60/40 split back seats up and 64.2 with them down.

This SUV is seriously zippy, well-executed EVs are a joy to drive, with their quiet engine and the way they seem to just glide down the road. The ID.4 is no exception, however the cornering could be a bit more sporty, although stable it’s not really exhilarating.

When looking for an EV compact SUV, with little or no range anxiety, give the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 an extra look.
