A compact crossover SUV that is built for inclement weather, the 2023 Subaru Forester Touring is one of Subaru’s most popular models. It’s solid build and high profile make it a favorite when tackling rough roads and better yet, no roads. It’s also a comfortable, smooth-driving car for the city, with its car-like mannerisms and roomy cabin.

I was sure glad of the rugged side of the Forester during my driving time, the rain was pounding and the roads were treacherous. It was a crazy drive, but I felt safe and secure in the Forester. It hugged the road and with its higher clearance I didn’t worry about those deeper puddles I had to navigate. Oh yeah and I loved the color, Cascade Green Silica, very cool.

The 2023 Forester has six trim levels to choose from: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited and Touring. This review will focus on the Touring trim.

The Touring model takes the lead in the lineup, offering a range of enhanced features. These include increased adjustability and memory settings for the driver’s seat, a power-adjustable passenger seat for added convenience, and a standard driver monitoring system that alerts you if it detects signs of fatigue. The Touring also boasts a nine-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system and an integrated navigation system, ensuring a high-quality audio experience and easy navigation. In addition, this model provides heated rear outboard seats and a heated steering wheel, adding comfort and warmth for all occupants.

A pokey 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine powers the Forester producing 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Where the Forester shines is with the standard all-wheel drive and higher ground clearance allowing the Forester to ford a small stream (or in my experience, a flooded highway) or take on a moderate off-road trail. The engine is paired to a CVT (continuously variable transmission) which uses 2 pulleys linked by a belt instead of gears to accomplish its goal. Expect to get 26/city, 33/highway, and 29/combined MPG. Not too shabby!

The Forester ensures a comfortable ride, be it commute or road trip. The front seats are generously cushioned and provide excellent bolstering and lumbar support, ensuring optimal comfort during your journeys. Additionally, the Forester’s suspension effectively absorbs bumps and uneven surfaces, offering a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

Get some Zen in your drive as the Forester also excels at minimizing road noise, creating a tranquil atmosphere within the cabin. While the tall profile of the vehicle may result in some wind noise, the benefits of its commanding seat position and excellent visibility outweigh this minor drawback. Moreover, the climate control knobs are intuitively placed, allowing you to adjust settings without diverting your attention from the road. The automatic climate control system functions effectively keeping both front and back seat passengers comfortable.

Putting the lackluster acceleration aside, the Forester is pleasant to drive with its smooth ride and quiet cabin. It steers well with a sturdy feel to it and smooth and responsive steering. It takes corners well with little body movement. Where it shines is off-road showing off its prowess as a capable rugged roader.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will keep the 2023 Subaru Forester Touring from its appointed destination!
