The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino starts an all-new program on Thursday, March 31, to inspire curiosity, conversation, and creativity.

This program, “Drawing from the Gallery,” begins at 5 p.m. with an in-gallery talk and overview of the exhibit “Science and the Sublime” by Melinda McCurdy, curator of British art at The Huntington, and concludes with a guided sketching session in the galleries with artist instructor Richard Scott.

All supplies and materials are covered by the ticket cost and will be provided on site.

Richard Scott is a painter, teacher and writer. He teaches drawing and painting at The Huntington, the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, and art workshops throughout the U.S. and Europe. For 20 years, he has taught at numerous universities including Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, Art Center, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Scott has written for various art and design magazines and in 2013 published a compendium on drawing called “Sketching – from Square One to Trafalgar Square.” He resides in Sierra Madre.

Melinda McCurdy curates exhibitions and writes and lectures on historical British and European art from an interdisciplinary perspective, examining the political and social forces that shape visual culture of the past. Much of her work at The Huntington has focused on its world-renowned collection of 18th century British portraiture, which includes Thomas Gainsborough’s “Blue Boy.”

McCurdy has a PhD in Art History from UC Santa Barbara and is a firm believer in the relevance of the humanities beyond academia. Many of her projects emphasize the meanings and continuities of the historical in contemporary life.

Tickets are $30 for The Huntington members and $35 for non-members.
