Visitors to Descanso Gardens can “learn to tell the story of a place through sketching with John Pitblado” during a specialized workshop on Friday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The three-hour “Sketch a Story” experience invites artists of all skill levels to develop observational drawing techniques while immersed in one of Southern California’s premier botanical destinations.
“This workshop begins with a short tour of Descanso Gardens and goes on to an exploration of simple compositional strategies used to record the Descanso landscape,” organizers explain.
Participants first explore the garden’s diverse landscapes through an instructor-led tour before engaging in focused sketching exercises that highlight compositional techniques for outdoor environments.
Instructor John Pitblado brings unique expertise, having transitioned from garment and textile design to urban sketching and teaching in 2017. His design background provides professional insights into visual composition and artistic technique.
Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils, eraser, and optional watercolors.
Sun protection is recommended for the outdoor workshop.
“Sketch a Story” will run on Friday July 25 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. At Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. For more call (818) 949-4200 or visit https://www.descansogardens.org/event/sketch-a-story-2/. Tickets: $35 for members, $45 for non-members.
