In this week’s episode, Pasadena Humane (PH) present Christy Schilling, executive director of Bark Avenue Foundation, who will talk about how she got started in rescue and all the bumps and bruises along the way.
Bark Avenue Foundation is an animal shelter in Glendale that empowers pet owners and local communities to reduce abandoned animal populations through spay and neuter, pet retention and reclamation, and education programs.
In Animal Sheltering, Bethany W. Adams, an advocacy journalist who writes stories about and for the animal welfare world, says the animal protection movement offers a variety of careers for such jobs as animal cruelty investigator, shelter veterinarian, or social media manager for an animal rescue organization.
Many people think working with animals means petting puppies or bottle-feeding kittens, she writes, and while that can be true, much of animal welfare involves behind-the-scenes work as well as hands-on interactions with animals.
Adams also lists a number of opportunities for people interested in the animal welfare world – jobs such as animal protection litigators for lawyers, to push for stronger animal protection laws; animal cruelty investigators for police officers; or animal caregivers or shelter veterinarians for nurses.
Business-minded people can be skilled shelter directors, she writes. Volunteer opportunities also abound in farm animal sanctuaries, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and emergency animal response organizations.
