Ego, Love, and the Things That Make Us Who We Are, Up Close and Personal

Published on Jan 29, 2021

Most of us are afraid to be vulnerable, but not Jedidiah Jenkins, who is speaking on Vroman’s Live, Vroman’s Bookstore’s Crowdcast channel, on Tuesday, February 2, at 6 p.m., about his new book, “Like Streams to the Ocean.”

This story contains notes on ego, love, and the things that make us who we are, subjects we can all try to relate to during this time.

In the book, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight subjects that give life meaning: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul.

“We wake up atop the dirt of our childhoods with a shovel in our hands. In our pocket is a crumpled note with conspicuously familiar handwriting. It says, ‘Good luck,’” part of the book reads.

“Who am I? What am I made of? How much of how I act boils down to avoiding the things that make me feel small?” As he examines the experiences that shape our conscious and subconscious answers to these questions, Jenkins leads readers in a wide-ranging conversation about finding fulfillment in the people and places around us and discovering the courage to show our deepest selves to the world.

Jenkins is a New York Times bestselling author, entrepreneur and Instagram personality. He began his professional career with the non-profit Invisible Children, where he helped orchestrate multinational campaigns to end the use of child soldiers in central Africa.

He is the executive editor of Wilderness magazine; Jenkins’s work has appeared in the Paris Review and Good magazine, and he has been covered by National Geographic.

During the presentation, Jenkins will be in conversation with Nicole Richie, television personality, fashion designer and actress, and Lionel Richie’s adopted daughter.

An event ticket, at $35, includes a hardcover copy of “Like Streams to the Ocean,” mailed to you after the event, as well as online access to the event for your household. You will receive a link and password to attend the Crowdcast event on the afternoon of Monday, February 1.
