Attica Locke and Rachel Howzell Hall

The Pasadena Literary Alliance brings back its Open Book series with an in-person outdoor event on Tuesday, October 19, featuring Attica Locke, author of Bluebird, Bluebird and writer/producer of “Little Fires Everywhere,” in conversation with mystery writer Rachel Howzell Hall.

This happens at Noor’s courtyard patio at The Paseo, 300 E Colorado Blvd Suite 200 in Pasadena, 6:30 to 9 p.m.

This is a rare opportunity to meet the Emmy-nominated and Edgar Award-winning writer who will discuss the latest book in her Highway 59 series, “Heaven, My Home,” a sequel to the New York Times best-seller, “Bluebird, Bluebird.”

“Heaven, My Home” was named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Houston Chronicle, and many others.

In TV and fiction alike, Locke has become one of the foremost writers whose work marries race, class, and socio-political issues with deeply entertaining stories that expand the reader’s understanding of the American experience. She has worked with Lee Daniels, writing and producing “Empire,” a wildly popular TV soap that never shied away from issues of race, mental health, and politics.

She also worked with Ava DuVernay on the searing true story of the Central Park Five in “When They See Us,” and helped bring Celeste Ng’s “Little Fires Everywhere” to the screen as writer and co-executive producer. Through her work, Locke has significantly influenced the world of crime fiction.

Rachel Howzell Hall is moderating. She is the critically acclaimed author of the recently released “These Toxic Things.” Her “And Now She’s Gone” was nominated for the Anthony, International Thriller Writers, and Lefty awards, and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

The evening begins with a pre-event hosted happy hour with appetizers.

To purchase your tickets, visit www.pasadenaliteraryalliance.org/open-book.

General tickets are $50, and student or educator tickets are $35.

Open Book builds on the successful Pasadena Festival of Woman Authors event which has been presented annually since 2009. The vision for the new series is to provide opportunities for the community to enjoy authors of all kinds – both established and emerging, national and local, men and women, writers of fiction and non-fiction – in settings that complement the author’s work or background and allow for engagement with the attendees.
