Experience a Virtual Visit to African American Firefighters Museum

Published on Feb 19, 2022

In honor of Black History Month, the Pasadena Public Library will host a virtual tour of the African American Firefighters Museum in Los Angeles, the first and only free-standing museum dedicated to the African American Firefighter experience in the United States, on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 5 to 6 p.m.

Located at 1401 S. Central Ave. in South Los Angeles, the African American Firefighters Museum occupies what used to be Fire Station No. 30, the home of Engine Company No. 30, a historic engine company that remained segregated until 1956 when the Los Angeles Fire Department was integrated. The fire station was closed in 1980.

Other displays include photos, artifacts and memorabilia of African American firefighters, officers and historical women fire service professionals from around the country. The Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer- and donation-driven.

Designed in the Prairie School style and built in 1913, the structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

In this virtual tour, Captain Brent F. Burton of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Museum historian, will lead participants through the facility which now houses vintage fire equipment and apparatus, memorabilia, histories and photos of pioneering African American firefighters in Los Angeles.

Attendance in this virtual tour is free but registration is required.
