Women and leadership have become a common theme in the 21st century, and Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena is pushing the envelope further by hosting an event focused on this topic.

Join the bookstore with Julia Gillard and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on “Vroman’s Live”  at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, as they discuss their book, “Women in Leadership: Real Lives, Real Lessons.”

“Women in Leadership” is an inspirational and practical book written by two high-achieving women — Gillard, former prime minister of Australia, and Okonjo-Iweala, former foreign minister of Nigeria — who share the experience and advice of some of the world’s most extraordinary women leaders, in their own words.

Through conversations with some of the world’s most powerful and interesting women — including Jacinda Ardern, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christine Lagarde, Michelle Bachelet, and Theresa May —  the authors explore gender bias and ask why there aren’t more women in leadership roles.

Gillard was Australia’s 27th prime minister, serving from 2010 to 2013. She has been on the board of Beyond Blue, a mental health organization, since December 2014 and its chair since July 2017, and was made an honorary fellow of Aberystwyth University in June 2015. Gillard has also served as the chairwoman of the Global Partnership for Education since February 2014.

Okonjo-Iweala served as Nigeria’s minister of finance from 2003 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2015, and was foreign minister in 2006. She was managing director of the World Bank from 2007 to 2011, overseeing South Asia, Europe, Central Asia, and Africa, and is currently board chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Chair of the African Risk Capacity (ARC). She is the author of “Reforming the Unreformable” and “Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous.”
