Get A Closeup Look at Local Judson Studios, Oldest Family-Run Stained-Glass Maker in the U.S

Published on Aug 29, 2021

Dr. James Fishburne, Director of Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale and curator of Judson Studios, considered the oldest family-run stained-glass maker in the U.S., will be conducting a Zoom lecture Thursday, September 2, on Judson Studios’ exhibit, “Stained Glass from Gothic to Street Style,” currently on display at Forest Lawn Museum through September 12.

The free lecture, part of the Pasadena Senior Center’s Cultural Thursdays series, is both in person at the PSC and virtual on Zoom, and begins at 2 p.m.

Dr. Fishburne has a PhD in Art History from UCLA and has been curator for several exhibits at The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. He has also been Research Associate and a member of the social media team at the Scholars Department, Getty Research Institute, in Los Angeles.

Founded in 1897, the Los Angeles-based Judson Studios has been a leader in the field of stained glass for more than 120 years. The exhibition includes nearly 100 original stained glass artworks, preparatory drawings, archival photographs, oil paintings, and watercolors, many of which have never before been exhibited.

Walk-ins will be admitted to Thursday’s in-person event at the Pasadena Senior Center, if space is available. Reservations are encouraged online through www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org/lectures-events/online-events/3620-a-cultural-thursdays-event-free-judson-studios-stained-glass-from-gothic-to-street-style. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

The Judson Studios: Stained Glass from Gothic to Street Style exhibit opened in April and includes such highlights as a hand-crafted window from Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1924 Ennis House, a fused glass portrait of Kobe Bryant by Tim Carey and Judson Studios, and “The Muralist” by David Flores, an enormous street-art-style window made of stained and fused glass.

The exhibit is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
