Leonard Mlodinow Discusses ‘Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking’

Published on Jan 8, 2022

Theoretical physicist and author Leonard Mlodinow, best-selling author of “Subliminal,” will discuss his new book, “Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking,” in a live event on Crowdcast Tuesday, January 11, at 6 p.m. sponsored by Vroman’s Bookstore.

In the book, Dr. Mlodinow tells about how extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to humans’ well-being as thinking is.

“You make hundreds of decisions every day, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest, and not one of those decisions would be possible without emotion. It has long been said that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior,” says a description of the book’s topic. “How can you connect better with others? How can you make sense of your frustration, fear, and anxiety? What can you do to live a happier life? The answers lie in understanding your emotions.”

Journeying from the labs of pioneering scientists to real-world scenarios that have flirted with disaster, Mlodinow shows how emotions can help, why they sometimes hurt, and what people can learn in both instances. Using deep insights into our evolution and biology, he provides the tools for understanding emotions better and maximizing their benefits.

Mlodinow is recognized for groundbreaking discoveries in physics, and as the author of five best-selling books. His book “The Grand Design,” co-authored with Stephen Hawking, reached #1 on the New York Times best-seller list; “Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior” won the 2013 PEN/E.O. Wilson award for literary science writing, and “The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives” was chosen as a New York Times notable book, and short-listed for the Royal Society book award.

Mlodinow is also known through his many public lectures and media appearances on programs such ranging from Morning Joe, to Through the Wormhole, and for debating Deepak Chopra on ABC’s Nightline.

Told with Mlodinow’s characteristic clarity, “Emotional” explores the new science of feelings and offers an essential guide to making the most of one of nature’s greatest gifts.
