Literary Tourism in Los Angeles

Published on Mar 5, 2022

The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino is hosting a lecture on “Literary Tourism in Los Angeles,” presented by author Katie Orphan, on Tuesday, March 8, 7:30 to 9 p.m. at The Huntington’s Rothenberg Hall.

“The last few years have seen many guides for literary tourism published, but very few mention Los Angeles,” a statement on The Huntington’s announcement said. “Those that do generally feature one or two authors, even with Los Angeles’ much deeper literary tradition.”

In this lecture, Orphan, author of “Read Me Los Angeles: Exploring LA’s Book Culture,” will cover over 100 years of literary tourism in Los Angeles – exploring a spectrum of topics from the draw of L.A. landmarks in novels like “Ramona” to the struggle of contemporary authors’ attempt to continue the tradition of travel writing during a pandemic.

In addition to writing “Read Me, Los Angeles: Exploring LA’s Book Culture,” Orphan is also the manager of Chevalier’s Books. She previously worked at Libreria L.A. and the Last Bookstore and wrote the Last Bookstore’s guide to downtown Los Angeles.

Orphan also wrote the recurring feature “Drinking with the Ghosts” for the Los Angeles Review of Books. She holds a master’s degree with a specialty in literary tourism.

The lecture is free to attend. Reservations are advised.
