Masters Series at Pasadena Senior Center Explores ‘The New Hollywood and the Rise of Cable TV’

Dr. Jonathan Kuntz, film historian and widely respected expert on Hollywood cinema and the development of the studio system, will discuss The New Hollywood and the Rise of Cable TV on Tuesday, February 16, 2 to 4 p.m., as the Pasadena Senior Center continues its 2021 Winter term of The Masters Series: History of American Movies, live on Zoom.

Since the earliest days of cinema, movies have captured imaginations, hearts and minds all over the world. Recommended for ages 50 and above, this Pasadena Senior Center Masters Series term covers the American film industry, from the birth of Hollywood at the turn to the last century, through the challenges facing film-making and distribution today.

Dr. Kuntz obtained a BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley in 1972 and an MA from UCLA in 1974. He earned his PhD in Film and Television at the UCLA College of Fine Arts in 1982.

Kuntz is a widely respected expert on Hollywood cinema and the development of the studio system. At UCLA, he taught his popular undergraduate course on the history of the American motion picture, every quarter.

Kuntz has also appeared in numerous documentaries on American film history as an expert on film production and exhibition. He is a New York Times contribuor.

Known for his encyclopedic knowledge, Kuntz has been quoted in the media on many topics, from the careers of Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe to the effects of the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm.
