Paul Klee (Swiss, 1879–1940), Possibilities at Sea, 1932, encaustic and sand on canvas, Norton Simon Museum, The Blue Four Galka Scheyer Collection
Your chances of getting into the Norton Simon Museum’s most exclusive art experience this month depend entirely on how early you arrive on September 18.
“Mindful Looking: Possibilities at Sea (1932)” offers just 15 participants the opportunity to examine Paul Klee’s encaustic and sand composition with unprecedented intimacy—and registration opens only when the museum doors open on Thursday, September 18, for the 1 p.m. event.
Education and Public Programs Coordinator Samantha Cruz will guide the select group through the Swiss artist’s 1932 work, underscoring the kind of deep observation Klee himself championed. As he wrote in his 1925 Pedagogical Sketchbook: “One learns to look behind the façade, to grasp the root of things … One learns to dig down, to uncover, to find the cause, to analyze.”
The experience costs $15 to $20, but securing a spot requires arriving early—”Space is limited to 15 participants. Sign up is required and is taken at the Information Desk when the museum opens on a first come, first served basis.”
“Mindful Looking: Possibilities at Sea (1932)” will run on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. Norton Simon Museum, 411 W. Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena.
