Liz Cheney, former U.S. Congresswoman and recipient of the Profile in Courage award, is set to address the current political divide and the state of American democracy at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena.

Cheney’s speech, scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, will also outline her vision for the nation’s future. The presentation is part of the Distinguished Speaker Series, featuring prominent global figures.

A specialist in national security and foreign policy, she is the co-author, along with her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, of “Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America.”

Cheney served as the U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. She chaired the House Republican Conference, the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership, from 2019 to 2021, and served as the Vice Chair of the Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection. She was also a member of the House Armed Services Committee, China Task Force, Natural Resources Committee, and the House Committee on Rules.

She served previously at the State Department as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and in positions for USAID and the Department of State working in Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine. She practiced law with White and Case and at the International Finance Corporation.

Cheney received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College, and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School.

In 2022, Cheney, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, received the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library’s prestigious Profile in Courage Award, with a commendation for her “consistent and courageous voice in defense of democracy.”

Kathy Winterhalder, Co-Founder of the Distinguished Speaker Series of Southern California, said the series provides an opportunity for the audience to engage directly with the speaker.

“We pride ourselves in the fact that what makes our series unique is that instead of the media selecting the sound bites or quotes, our patrons can listen, submit their questions and decide for themselves,” Winterhalder said. “Instead of letting the media decide the sound bite, you get to come to your own conclusion.  Hear from the person who lived it not who wrote about it.”

Cheney’s appearance follows her recent actions, including her vocal criticisms of  former President Donald Trump, and her role in chairing the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. These actions led to her censure by the Republican National Committee. She lost in the 2022 Wyoming Republican primary.

Despite these challenges, Cheney remains an active figure in the political landscape, amplifying her message through her recent memoir, “Oath and Honor,” which quickly sold out upon release on Dec. 5. The book portrays her resolute stand in the defense and preservation of democracy.

The Distinguished Speaker Series will also host Cheney on Jan. 29 in Redondo Beach, Jan. 30 in Thousand Oaks, and Feb. 1 in Long Beach.

The series has earlier featured speeches by Dr. Lisa Genova, General H. R. McMaster, and Thomas Friedman, among others.

To attend the Distinguished Speaker Series, individuals are required to purchase subscription packages from $300 to $440 for all four evenings. No single-speaker tickets are available.
