Vroman's 131-year legacy meets modern BookTok phenomenon as debut novelist Joss Richard draws a standing-room-only crowd

Free tickets disappeared so quickly that Vroman’s Bookstore posted a warning: arrive early for first-come, first-served seating at what promises to be a packed event.

The event will feature romance author Joss Richard in conversation with bestselling author Elissa Sussman at the institution in Pasadena. It reflects both the current romance publishing boom and the enduring appeal of Southern California’s oldest independent bookstore.

Vroman’s, founded in 1894 by Adam Clark Vroman, has weathered 131 years of literary trends, but the current romance surge represents something unprecedented. Industry data shows BookTok influence driving sales spikes of 500–800 percent for featured romance titles, while September has been dubbed “a phenomenal month for romance readers.”

Richard, a Daytime Emmy Award–winning producer and editorial director turned romance novelist, will be joined by Sussman, author of “Funny You Should Ask,” “Once More With Feeling” and “Totally and Completely Fine” (July 8). Sussman also hosts the R-rated podcast “But How’s the Sex.”

“Our longevity is because of the people,” said Julia Cowlishaw, CEO of Vroman’s Bookstore. “Our dedicated customers and our dedicated team of employees are the reason we are still here.”

Despite sold-out RSVP status, Vroman’s encourages walk-ins. “The free RSVP for this event is full, but we would still love for you to join us! We expect a large crowd for this event, please arrive early. Seating will be first come first served,” the bookstore announced.

Books will be available for purchase with signing opportunities.
