Savor and Learn: Full Moon Raku Tea Ceremony at the Pasadena Buddhist Temple

Published on Jan 3, 2023

Alan Nakagawa, currently on his fourth year as artist-in-residence at the Pasadena Buddhist Temple through Side Street Projects, continues the second session of his Full Moon Raku Tea Ceremony on Friday, Jan. 6, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The event is part of Side Street Projects International Tea House Lecture Series at the  the Pasadena Buddhist Temple that started in 2019.

Side Street Project supports artists who work in communities instead of galleries and make work that is not easily bought or sold.

Session 1, “Ceramic Workshop,” was on Dec. 9 and was about the making of ceramic tea bowls by the community.

Session 2 will consist of an afternoon Raku firing of the bowls at Green and Bisque Clayhouse in Pasadena. Then in the evening, the Full Moon Tea Ceremony, led by tea ceremony teacher Jose Salcedo, will take place with live traditional Koto Music by Hiroko Masuda and June Chin, and Experimental Soundscapes by Nakagawa with Zoe Kumagai.
