Sierra Madre Playhouse Fêted As Non-Profit of the Year

Published on Aug 12, 2023

U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu has recognized the Sierra Madre Playhouse as “Non-Profit of the Year” at her 2023 Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards.

“The selected groups and individuals received this honor because of the remarkable, commendable work they have accomplished in their field,” Chu said in a statement. “The honorees are leaders who have stood out because of their drive and commitment to support our communities, help vulnerable populations, and carry us through difficult times. They are heroes that inspire us all.”

The Sierra Madre Playhouse opened as a “silent movie” theater and will mark its 100th anniversary next year. It is now a nonprofit arts venue that offers high-quality and inclusive entertainment.

Forced to close due to the pandemic in 2020, the Sierra Madre offered virtual shows until its reopening in July 2021. Over the years, it has also partnered with the Pasadena Unified School District to provide theater education and outreach programs for sixth-grade students.

The awards ceremony, held on July 29, honored the diverse leadership and volunteerism in the cities making up the 28th District. Chu selected the honorees from nominations submitted by members of their community.

Chu’s Congressional Leadership Awards also honored other community groups and leaders in the 28th District including Pasadena-based Friends in Deed, the Claremont Forum, Foothills Community Scholarship Foundation of La Canada Flintridge, Abel Ramirez, Dianne Lewis, Tin Tran, Nicholas Quach and Shirley Virginia Kelley Bellemeur.
