Strange Science: Tales from the Vault with The Huntington Library

Published on Oct 30, 2020

Public access to The Huntington’s “Strange Science: Tales from the Vault” virtual event begins Saturday, October 31, at 10 a.m., and hold onto your hat. It’s downright creepy.

In “Strange Science,” you will discover the eerier side of The Huntington in a virtual event where curators and botanists share rarely seen objects and otherworldly stories from deep inside the collections. Enter a mysterious world of ghoulish characters, bizarre plants, and devilish elixirs and treats you can make at home.

Some of the titles featured in “Strange Science” include “Lunar Madness – from Galileo to Howling Coyotes,” by Daniel Lewis, Dibner Senior Curator for the History of Science and Technology at The Huntington; “A Painting Casts its Spell – The Three Witches,” by Melinda McCurdy, Associate Curator for British Art; “Images of Alchemy – The Ripley Scroll and philosopher’s stones, phoenixes, dragons, and Sir Isaac Newton,” by Joel Klein, Molina Curator for the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences; “What Lies Beneath – Spectral imaging and mysterious hidden figures in Henry Fuseli’s “The Three Witches,” by Christina O’Connell, the Mary Ann and John Sturgeon Senior Paintings Conservator; and “A Little Shop Surgical Theater on the Road – Dissecting some familiar plants with some less than scientific tools,” by James P. Folsom, Marge and Sherm Telleen/Earle and Marion Jorgensen Director of the Botanical Gardens at The Huntington.
