The Bees of South Pasadena

Published on Oct 18, 2022

South Pasadena Beautiful and The Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library present “Bees of South Pas,” a free community event on Wednesday, Oct. 19, where you can socialize and learn about nature’s best socializers: bees!

The event takes place at the South Pasadena Library Community Room, at 1115 El Centro Street, and features fascinating presentations by local beekeeper Michael Pusateri and native bee expert Hartmut Wisch. It also coincides with the annual meeting of South Pasadena Beautiful.

Pusateri is a longtime South Pasadena resident, television engineer, and person with many hobbies. He took up beekeeping in 2018 and has been keeping bees in his backyard, learning a lot of lessons and getting a few stings and a little honey along the way. Pusateri will be speaking about the basics of bees, their lifecycle, and his experience as a local beekeeper.

Wisch is a retired naturalist-guide who lead European visitors through natural areas of the U.S. and Canadian West for 35 years, and later discovered a love for macro photography. His principal interests are insects, mostly South Pasadena’s native bees. He has taken several bee identification classes with the late Robbin Thorp, is a member of the Lorquin Entomological Society, Pacific Coast Entomological Society, and is a contributing editor at Bugguide.net. Wisch is a volunteer docent at Eaton Canyon Natural Area and a past docent naturalist at California Botanic Garden in Claremont.
