The Future of Sci-Fi Comes to Pasadena: A-List Celebrities to Give Dramatic Readings of High Schoolers’ Original Works

A-list celebrities take to the stage at Pasadena’s Vroman’s Bookstore to read out loud the best original science fiction stories by Los Angeles County high school students on Saturday, May 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

The event, titled “The Tomorrow Prize and The Green Feather Award Celebrity Readings and Honors,” promises to be a night of drama and excitement, as some of the biggest names in entertainment bring the work of the next generation of sci-fi writers to life.

Among the confirmed celebrity guests are Leilani Shiu, best known for her role in “The Mandalorian,” and Yasmine Al-Bustami, star of hit TV shows such as “The Originals” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” Jasika Nicole, known for her roles in “Fringe” and “The Good Doctor,” and Phil Anthony Rodriguez, who appeared in “Star Wars: Rebels” and “Grimm,” will also be present. Rico E. Anderson, who starred in “The Orville” and “Star Trek,” as well as Amy Tolsky of “Trust” fame, are also on the guest list.

The event is free to attend with registration, and attendees can secure their spots via Eventbrite. It will feature dramatic readings of seven short stories, including five finalists for The Tomorrow Prize. Rafael Chavez, from Port of Los Angeles High School, will read “What Lies Beyond.” Barrie Komsky, of Cleveland Charter High School, will present “Burn the World, Build with the Ashes.” Miguel Lujan, from Downtown Magnets High School, will read “Nights in the City.” Evin Manlapaz, from John Marshall High School, will present “The Blanket.” And Jasmine Sov, of Pasadena High School, will read “Obsolete.”

Celebrities will also read two eco-themed short sci-fi stories by the winners of The Green Feather Award, a special prize co-sponsored by the Nature Nexus Institute. Diana Pena, of Downtown Magnets High School, will read “Painting the Way Through the Future.” And Haifa Maung and Fia Layne, from Culver City High School, will present “Connections with Sage the Fungi.”

Honorable mentions for The Tomorrow Prize and The Green Feather Award will also be honored on stage with certificates. Isaac Graham, of Pasadena High School, will be awarded an honorable mention for The Tomorrow Prize. And Trotsky Cartagena, from Port of Los Angeles High School, will receive an honorable mention for The Green Feather Award.

The Omega Sci-Fi Awards, which were founded in 2014 by Sci-Fest L.A., run both The Tomorrow Prize and The Green Feather Award. They are now a program of the nonprofit Light Bringer Project of Pasadena, and the major sponsor is The Roddenberry Foundation. L.A. Parent Magazine publishes the first place winning story, while Nature Nexus Institute co-presents The Green Feather Award.
