Tony and Drama Desk Awards-Winning “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” Onstage at Theatre 360

Published on Jul 6, 2021

Theatre 360, at 2623 E. Foothill Blvd., Suite 104 in Pasadena, presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on Friday, July 9, starting at 7 p.m.

Winner of the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

A musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with additional material by Jay Reiss, the show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

First produced on Broadway in 2005 by David Stone and company, directed by James Lapine, the show earned good reviews and box-office success and was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the United States, and other countries.

An unusual aspect of the show is that four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters.

This is an in-person production. Seating is limited and audience members must wear masks.
