Pasadena Heritage continues Preservation Pasadena, the new virtual format of the annual Craftsman Weekend, starting on Friday, November 5, 7 to 8:30 p.m., with a presentation exploring Pasadena bungalow courts that range from 1910 to the 1940s.

Craftsman Weekend took on a new name and the new format last year because of the pandemic. Even before that, the annual celebration has been the largest and most comprehensive salute to the Arts and Crafts Movement in the western United States.

With Preservation Pasadena, Pasadena Heritage hosts a 10-day celebration of preservation and architecture that includes virtual tours, lectures, panel discussions, and conversations with artists and collectors. With this year’s theme, “Craftsman to Modern,” the series will look at some of the most notable examples of architect-designed properties from Craftsman style to Modern and everything in between – five decades of architectural style and design evolution, and the connections and differences that illustrate how architecture changed through time.

The series begins with “Bungalow Courts” on November 5, looking at how bungalow courts in Pasadena were built as a form of multifamily housing with the atmosphere of a group of detached houses in a garden setting.

The introductory presentation and tour materials will provide insights into the origins and evolution of this appealing type of residential architecture, a form that originated in Pasadena. You will hear about works bySylvanus Marston, the Heineman brothers, D. M. Renton, Buchanan and Brockway, and many other designers.

Friday’s Pasadena Heritage presenters are Juan Dela Cruz, William W. Ellinger III, and John Ripley.

The presentation will be live on Zoom and available as a self-driving tour using the Izi Travel App.
