What We’re Warching: Latest ‘Transformers’ Film Opens With $60.5M to Lead Box Office

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” opened with $60.5 million this weekend to win a close box office battle with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The seventh entry in the franchise about shape-shifting machines stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback. It held off a strong second weekend from the animated “Spider-Man” film, which grossed $55.4 million at North American theaters, one week after opening in first place with over $120 million, Comscore reported.

“The Little Mermaid” was third with $22.7 million Friday through Sunday in its third week of release.

Fourth place went to “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3,” which made $7 million in its sixth week, followed by “The Boogeyman,” with $6.9 million in its second week.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Fast X” ($5.2 million), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($2.1 million), “About My Father” ($845,000), “The Machine” ($575,000) and “Past Lives” ($520,772).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $163.7 million. The year-to-date total is $3.916 billion — an increase of 25% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
