Two new fantasy/action films knocked “Godzilla vs. Kong” from its perch atop the box office this weekend, as “Mortal Combat” grossed $22.5 million to lead all films, according to industry estimates out Sunday.

Warner Bros’ big-screen version of the popular video game beat out the Japanese anime epic “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” which took in $19.5 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.

“Godzilla vs. Kong,” which had ruled the box office for the previous three weeks, was third with $4.2 million.

“Nobody” was fourth with $1.86 million, followed by “Raya and the Last Dragon” with $1.68 million.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “The Unholy” ($1.4 million), “Tom & Jerry” ($650,000), “Together Together” ($522,440), “The Girl Who Believes in Miracles” ($336,957) and “The Courier” ($264,175).

Domestic box office totals this weekend were the highest they’ve been since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic at roughly $54.2 million, according to Comscore.
