What We’re Watching: ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Opens With Huge $143 Million Weekend

“Jurassic World Dominion” roared to a $143 million opening weekend to lead the way at the box office, topping another strong performance from “Top Gun: Maverick,” according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The latest installment of the dinosaur franchise helped overall movie ticket sales in North America surpass $200 million for only the third weekend since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Top Gun: Maverick” grossed $50 million in its third weekend in theaters, bringing its cumulative total to $393 million, Comscore reported.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was third with $4.8 million in its sixth week of release.

“The Bob’s Burgers Movie” made $2.3 million Friday through Sunday in its third weekend for fourth place, followed by “The Bad Guys,” which grossed $2.2 million in its eighth week.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Downton Abbey: A New Era” ($1.6 million), “Everything Everywhere All at Once” ($1.2 million), “Firestarter” ($820,000), “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” ($710,000) and “Ante Sundaraniki” ($620,000).
