What We’re Watching: Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Still Rules Box Office With $40 Million

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” continues to reach rare heights at the box office, taking in $40 million in its fourth weekend of release to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The Universal Pictures film, based on the popular Nintendo video game, has grossed more than $1 billion globally, with a $490 million domestic total and another $532 million in foreign markets.

“Evil Dead Rise” made $12.2 million in its second weekend to take second place, Comscore reported.

“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” based on the popular 1970 Judy Blume book, opened with $6.8 million for third place.

“John Wick: Chapter 4” was fourth with $5 million Friday through Sunday in its sixth week in theaters, followed by a re-release of 1983’s “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” which grossed $4.69 million.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” ($4.1 million), “Air” ($4 million), “PS-2/Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two” ($3.64 million), “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” ($3.61 million) and “Sisu” ($3.2 million).
