What We’re Watching: ‘The Woman King’ Opens With $19 Million to Lead Box Office

The historical epic “The Woman King” opened atop the box office this weekend, taking in $19 million at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

“The Woman King” stars Viola Davis as a general in a unit of female soldiers who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries.

The horror film “Barbarian” took in $6.3 million Friday through Sunday, one week after opening in first place.

Another horror film, “Pearl,” opened in third place with $3.12 million, Comscore reported.

“See How They Run,” a 1950s-set mystery starring Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell, opened in fourth place with $3.1 million.

“Bullet Train” was fifth, grossing $2.5 million in its seventh week in theaters.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Top Gun: Maverick” ($2.18 million), “DC League of Super-Pets” ($2.17 million), “The Invitation” ($1.7 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($1.3 million) and “Moonage Daydream” ($1.2 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $50.2 million. The year-to-date total is up to $5.5 billion — an increase of 135.2% over 2021’s figure, according to Comscore.
