Wyatt Doyle Exhibits ‘Simple and Direct’ Works at Gallery 30 South

Gallery 30 South, at 30 S. Wilson Ave., presents photographer, designer, author and essayist Wyatt Doyle and his new exhibit, “And the red death held sway over the dollar store,” from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday up to March 26.

Doyle was born in Pennsylvania but for two decades earned a living in and on the fringes of the film and television industry in Los Angeles. A regular commuter on public transportation, years spent waiting at bus stops and riding buses introduced Doyle to a range of places, personalities and street-level perspectives to his work that the isolation of freeway travel would not have made possible.

Photography critic Bill Shute describes Doyle’s art as “moments of junk-store epiphany, of accidental revelation, which lurk unnoticed in the most taken-for-granted parts of everyday run-down America.”

“Simple and direct are my preferences,” Doyle says of the exhibit. “I prefer natural or source light. I use consumer-grade, point-and-shoot cameras. I avoid manipulating images. I like photographs that imply a narrative. I’m interested in people, places, and objects – how they intersect and interact, and the ways time and physical surroundings affect, alter, and comment. It’s a conversation, and I document that conversation.”

Each piece in Doyle’s fine art gallery debut is a 3”x3” archival inkjet, UV coated high-gloss photograph in an 8”x8” acid-free mat and sleeve from an edition of only two artist proofs, signed and dated verso. It was important to both the artist and Gallery 30 South to provide a truly egalitarian price point and so each is only $145. The Gallery also has the books that first gave these photos provenance for $30 each – allowing multiple, affordable tiers for supporting the show.

All artworks and publications are available for purchase through the Gallery’s safe and secure online shopping cart.

No RSVP is necessary to visit the show, but all attendees are required to wear masks and adhere to safe and proper social distancing while on the premises. Anyone exhibiting signs of illness is asked to refrain from entering the gallery. To best observe public health regulations, access to the restrooms is prohibited so plan your visit accordingly.
