YouGov 2023 Survey Reveals Americans’ New Year’s Resolutions

Published on Dec 31, 2023

In a recent survey conducted by YouGov, more than one-third of Americans (37%) have stated they will have a goal or resolution for the upcoming year 2023. The survey, titled “What are Americans’ New Year’s resolutions for 2023?” was conducted from December 16 to 21, 2022, among 1,000 U.S. adult citizens.

Women More Likely to Resolve to Eat Healthier, Lose Weight, and Travel

The survey results revealed that women were slightly more likely than men to say that in 2023 they resolve to eat healthier (23% vs. 13%), lose weight (21% vs. 12%), or travel (14% vs. 7%).

Survey Methodology

The YouGov poll was conducted online among 1,000 U.S. adult citizens. Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel using sample matching. A random sample (stratified by gender, age, race, education, geographic region, and voter registration) was selected from the 2019 American Community Survey. The sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, education, 2020 election turnout and presidential vote, baseline party identification, and current voter registration status.

Looking Ahead to 2024

As the year draws to a close, YouGov asked Americans to evaluate how 2023 was for themselves and the country and to share their expectations for 2024. Majorities say 2023 was a bad or terrible year for the country, but that they fared better personally. Republicans are particularly likely to have a negative view of the past year; they’re also more likely than Democrats and Independents to predict a bad or terrible 2024.

This survey was part of YouGov’s ongoing efforts to gauge public opinion on a variety of topics. The organization conducts regular surveys on politics, current affairs, and societal issues, providing valuable insights into the thoughts and opinions of Americans.
