A Crepe For All Kinds

If you’ve ever had good, freshly made crepe, you’ll agree: it’s hard to say no. Whether you like yours savory or sweet, the light pancake makes a perfect canvas for homemade sauces and fresh ingredients.

You can find a variety of delightful and delicious crepes at the Crepe Studio in Old Town Pasadena. Owned by Sona Guloyan, this shop has been open for over four years, with their fifth anniversary coming up in October.

And while people can always enjoy crepes at the restaurant itself, crepes are also an impressive dish to share with guests at parties and events. Crepe Studio offers platter catering (while they offer pre-set platters, the team is extremely accommodating with custom assortments) as well as on-site catering where team members actually create crepes fresh for your guests using a portable crepe-making station.

“The fun thing about our catering is that it’s very custom. You can choose 8, 12, 15-person platter set-ups. Then we have different types of food if you want. You can do all crepes. You can do half crepes, half paninis. We have 8 to 12 serving salads. Everything on our menu is available for catering,” says Guloyan.

Crepe Studio can also make gluten-free crepes for your guests. “That has been a huge request. We also have wheat instead of regular white batter. On top of that, we’re also looking into vegan crepes.”

“I just did a party where there were a few guests that were gluten-free. We made a gluten-free batch and then everybody was really happy. They actually got to enjoy all the food with their friends and family instead of just sitting there watching.”

And while their platters are great for office parties, for a truly impressive treat for your guests consider their crepe station service.

Guloyan shares that they’ve done a couple of events and parties where their presence made a huge impact on the festivities. One of her most unforgettable catering events? “I’ve done a few Indian weddings and those are so much fun. They wanted desserts because they had their Indian cuisine for dinner. The people loved having us there. The guests all enjoyed it.”

At first glance, crepes and Indian weddings seem an odd couple, but when you imagine a lavish room filled with desserts, it’s easy to see crepes taking center stage.

While its crown jewel remains to be the assortment of savory and sweet crepes, Crepe Studio also offers salads, paninis, sandwiches, and croissants.

Guloyan’s favorite crepe selections? “For the savory category, I would say my favorite is the Southwestern Chicken. It has spicy chipotle and it’s really, really yummy. For the desserts, my favorite is the new Nutella Peanut Butter. I’m a huge fan of peanut butter.”

The most popular savory crepe among the diners is the Pesto Chicken Heaven, made with grilled chicken breast, mozzarella cheese, oven roasted red peppers, tomatoes, and fresh spinach with pesto sauce. “The pesto is so popular. I feel like I can just run a business on just having the pesto crepes sometimes!”

The bestselling sweet crepe, on the other hand, is the Classic Ala Mode, which has Nutella, strawberries, bananas, and vanilla ice cream.

What makes the Crepe Studio crepes so special? Guloyan muses, “We really care about the quality of the food. We make our dressing here from a family recipe. The crepe itself, the batter, it’s my grandma’s recipe. She’s originally from Estonia.”

Crepe Studio also stays true to itself—it doesn’t assert that they’re serving classic French crepes. “We are not French, and I don’t like to lie to my customers. So ours is more of an American flavor,” says Guloyan.
