Barcelona Faces Off Against Los Angeles in Rose Bowl Soccer Action

Pasadena’s Rose Bowl hosts international soccer once again when Futbol Club Barcelona takes on the Los Angeles Galaxy in Match Six of the 2015 International Champions Cup on July 21 at 8 p.m.

This will be FC Barcelona’s second time to play in the Arroyo Seco. On August 1, 2009, Pep Guardiola’s squad took on the Galaxy in the stadium and emerged with a 2-1 triumph on goals from Bojan Krkic and Jeffren Sujarez.

This month’s match will be Barça’s first stop on a US tour.

The Rose Bowl, which has a natural grass playing surface and has a seating capacity of 92,542, is more renowned for American football. It is currently the home of the UCLA Bruins in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and has been the site of the Rose Bowl game since 1943.

In fact, the Galaxy themselves once called the Rose Bowl home from its founding in 1996 until they moved to their current grounds, the StubHub Center, in 2003.

Aside from Major League Soccer, the Pasadena stadium has been in the international soccer spotlight as well. Eight matches in the 1994 FIFA World Cup were played in the Rose Bowl, including four in the first round, one in the last 16, one of the two semifinals, and the thrilling Final where Brazil beat Italy, 3-2, on penalty kicks after 120 minutes of scoreless play.

The International Champions Cup is now on its third year. Aside from the US games, matches will also be played in Canada, Mexico City and in European venues.

Tickets for the contest at the Rose Bowl Stadium are available at www.ticketmaster.com, although the ICC website says tickets for the July 21st game have been sold out.
