A young woman who was just trying to help two men in a car asking for directions Thursday was attacked and robbed and could have been pulled beneath the car’s wheels when the men sped off with her cellphone.

While the 18-year-old woman was showing a map on her cellphone, one of the two suspects attempted to take hold of the victim’s backpack and in so doing pulled her to the ground. She was able to maintain hold of her backpack but lost her cellphone.

Pasadena police Lt. Mark Goodman said the strong-arm robbery happened at about 5:25 p.m. in the 100 block of South Sierra Madre Blvd.

The suspects were in a light-colored two-door vehicle when the incident happened.

“The suspects pulled along the victim as she was walking on the street asking directions to the Pasadena City College,” Goodman said. “The victim obliged with their inquiry and proceeded to finding directions on her cellphone. As the victim handed her cellphone to the man on the passenger side to show them a map, the suspect attempted to remove the victim’s backpack. She was able to maintain possession of her backpack, but the suspect tried to pull it off of her causing her to fall to the ground.”

Goodman said the victim sustained a minor abrasion to one of her hips as a result.

After the victim fell to the ground, the suspect released hold of the backpack and the suspects drove away with her cellphone.

Officers searched the area but did not find the suspects, one of whom was as male, black or Hispanic, between 20 and 30 years of age, medium built and with short hair, and the other male, black or Hispanic, between 20 and 25 years old, sporting shoulder length hair.

Goodman said the woman did not require hospitalization or medical treatment.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspects is asked to call the Pasadena Police Department, (626) 744-4501.
