New-Look PCC Football Scrimmages Fullerton Saturday

With one-time Mission Conference winning head coach Tom Maher (1996-2004) back in charge, the 2016 Pasadena City College football team will be introduced to fans in a pre-season scrimmage against Fullerton College at Robinson Stadium this Saturday, Aug. 27.

The scrimmage begins with drills at 3:30 p.m. and an abbreviated game starting after 6 p.m.

Admission is free with a $10 donation acccepted for dinner that is catered by local eatery Lee’s Hoagie House and Patticakes of Altadena. Besides watching the Lancers in action, a contingent from the Lancers Marching Band will perform.

Members of the 1974 undefeated Metropolitan Conference champion Lancers team will be holding a reunion at the scrimmage. Among the guests will be Myron Tarkanian, the head coach of that talented squad (10-0-1 record) and PCC Sports Hall of Famers Harvey Hyde and Skip Robinson, the school’s athletic director from 1995-2007. Robinson and Hyde both were assistant coaches to Tarkanian in ’74. Expected to attend is All-American offensive lineman Ned Vessey with the reunion spearheaded by ’74 alumnus Eric Imhof.

PCC is led this season by redshirt freshman quarterback Jesse Hanckel, a 6-foot-4, 202-pound bounceback from Fresno State, who broke every passing record at Village Christian High. The defense is paced by letterman defensive back and safety Kendell Jefferson (No. 17 in action photo last year).

This is the first year that football teams across the state are holding scrimmages involving opposing colleges since 2008 when cost containment measures were passed by the CCCAA to limit the number of contests in every sport.
