Authorities announced a $20,000 reward has been offered to anyone who can give information that will lead to an arrest and conviction in the case of what has been called a mistaken identity killing of a 34-year-old Pasadena city employee.

Tauruson McMillian was shot and killed last Jan. 4 while driving his red SS Monte Carlo northbound on Wilmington Avenue from Rosecrans Avenue in Compton.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives said the victim wasn’t a gang member, and that he worked for Pasadena’s Public Works Department and studied fire science with aspirations to join the fire department.

“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time …  he was an innocent victim,” Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida said.  “We’re looking for the public’s assistance in finding out anything or any kind of information about suspects who are involved in this senseless murder.”

Media reports said McMillian may have been shot simply because he was driving a red vehicle.

The city of Compton and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect or suspects.

Detectives said witnesses heard the sound of gunshots about 6:30 p.m., and saw the victim’s car crash into into a fence on the Northeast corner of Wilmington Avenue and Cressey Street.

Deputies who responded to the 1300 block of North Wilmington Avenue found the victim seated in his car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The department asked anyone with vital information related to the crime to call Lieutenant John Corina or Sergeant Paul O’Brien at the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500 and refer to Report No. 2014-00142-2813-011.

The Board of Supervisors said the reward will be given to those who can provide useful information to the authorities by June 30.
