About Pasadena Museum of History

Pasadena Museum of History is a dynamic, multi-faceted institution offering year-round tours, exhibitions, and public programming for all ages that enhance the understanding and enjoyment of Pasadena and the West San Gabriel Valley. Changing exhibitions in the History Center Galleries and related lectures and workshops cover a range of locally relevant topics, recently including the Civil War and Pasadena, aviation history, vintage fashions, and contemporary Southern Californian artwork. Guided tours of historic Fenyes Mansion, with its original period furnishings, family heirlooms, and unique California plein air art collection offer an intimate look back at Pasadena in the early 1900s. The Library and Archives collection includes over one million historic photographs, manuscripts, books, maps, architectural artifacts, and ephemera and is open to the general public at no cost.

About Fabulous Fashion

The exhibition Fabulous Fashion compares three significant decades of women’s fashion history — the Gay Nineties, the Roaring Twenties, and the Atomic Fifties. The displays include all the garments a properly-dressed woman would have found necessary throughout a day and night in each of the featured decades. Nightgowns, day dresses, cocktail dresses, evening wear, outerwear, and accessories are on view along with varied objects and photographs illustrating the activities and lifestyle of the garments’ wearers.

From the uncomfortable corsets and ornate bodices of the 1890s to the deconstructed freedom of the 1920s to the full skirts and bullet bras of the 1950s, fashion trends in Pasadena followed the rest of the country. These decades were shaped by society, economics, and lifestyle. Over forty exquisite garments, accented by accessories and other materials from the Museum’s extensive collections, illustrate the swing from rigid structure to freedom and back to restrictive customs.

Pasadena Museum of History is located at the corner of Orange Grove Boulevard and Walnut Street (470 W. Walnut Street, Pasadena). Free parking is available in the Museum lot (enter driveway on Walnut Street) and on Walnut Street. The Neighborhood Night activities will take place in the History Center, immediately to the west of the parking lot.
