Pasadena Reportedly in First-Ever City/Private Sector Deal to Improve Local Parking With a Mobile App

The City of Pasadena has reportedly signed a partnership with New York-based P3Global Management (P3GM) to improve parking in the city through a shared, peer-to-peer mobile solution.

Once the system is in place, private parking spot owners in Pasadena will be able to list their unused and available spaces for a period of time and price of their choosing. Residents and visitors will then be able to reserve and safely pay for parking using the mobile application.

By allowing private parking spots to be shared, the solution aims to increase the supply of convenient parking spaces and reduce the amount of time cars circle city streets in search of parking.

The program is expected to launch in the Summer of 2016.

P3GM says this is the first time any city has partnered with the private sector to help solve parking challenges through a shared economy solution.

“The City has been seeking a community approach to solving our parking challenges, and we hope our pioneering partnership with P3GM will do just that,” Pasadena Transportation Director Frederick Dock says of the partnership. “By working closely with P3GM to engage Pasadena businesses and potential sponsors, we hope to make parking more convenient for visitors and, in turn, to create a more sustainable and vibrant Pasadena.”

Jeff Thomashow, P3GM’s Director of Project Development, says he hopes the unique Pasadena program will be a model for upcoming public-private partnerships anywhere.

“P3GM is thrilled to partner with the City of Pasadena to launch what we believe will be a transformational approach to solving municipal parking and traffic challenges,” Thomashow says. “Using technology to make vacant private parking spaces available encourages the maximization of existing resources that would otherwise remain idle.”

P3GM was established in 2012 and develops public-private partnerships (P3s) that facilitate collaboration between municipalities and the private sector to launch innovative smart city projects.
