PCC Now Offering Pre-Assessment Workshops for Placement Exams

Pasadena City College has announced that it is now offering Pre-Assessment Workshops and Study Sessions (PAWS) for students preparing to take PCC Accuplacer assessment exams. Workshops are free and available until Aug. 15.

First-time college students are required to take math and English/ESL placement exams to assist them in determining which courses to take at PCC. The chemistry exam is provided for students who need to take a Chemistry 1A course for their major.

“PCC is making a full effort to create a first-year experience where students coming in from high school are equipped with the study and academic skills needed to get through the system as efficiently as possible,” said John Wood, director of the PCC Learning Assistance Center.

The workshops, led by trained peer tutors, provide online practice tests that simulate the Accuplacer exams. Students are given licenses that allow them to access the tests outside the workshop. Study skills and important information on how to arrive well-prepared for the exams are also taught, and Math and English tutoring are available as well.

PAWS workshops are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 8 to 10 a.m., 10 a.m. to noon, and noon to 2 p.m., with an additional 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. session offered on Wednesdays. All workshops are held in W101, except the Wednesday evening sessions, which are in D101.

“We highly encourage students to use this resource so they start their education at PCC where they belong,” Wood said.
