Rep. Chu Statement on Transportation Reauthorization and Freight Funding

Published on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 | 11:20 am

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement in support of a long term reauthorization of federal highway funding through MAP-21 and the need for dedicated funding for our freight infrastructure:

“Transportation is crucial to our daily lives, our businesses, and our vitality. Here in the San Gabriel Valley, we have a number of projects underway to repair and improve our infrastructure. But often, that progress happens despite consistent federal funding,” said Rep. Chu. “We need a long-term extension of funding for federal transportations programs. But we must act quickly. MAP-21, which allows the Highway Trust Fund to fund crucial highway and public transit projects all over the region and country, expires in a few weeks.

“Reauthorization should include specific freight infrastructure funding. Sixty percent of our nation’s shipping containers come through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, through the San Gabriel Valley, and then to the rest of the nation. Our communities deserve the certainty that the federal government will invest in their prosperity. I am committed to guaranteeing the long-term infrastructure commitments we need.”
