The Tournament of Roses honored Singpoli American BD Monday with the 2018 Rose Parade Sweepstakes trophy for the float “Rising Above,” as the “most beautiful entry encompassing float design, floral presentation and entertainment.”
“We are extremely honored and quite humbled to have been awarded our second Sweepstakes Trophy,” said Kin Hui, CEO of Singpoli American BD. “Rising Above tells an inspiring story of overcoming the odds against adversity. It is a story that everyone can understand. We all must rise above to make a difference in the world and we hope to motivate others to work toward achieving their own dreams like the fish at the dragon gate.”
Beautifully designed, “Rising Above” incorporates over 250,000 blossoms, including hundreds of white roses, orchids and a variety of carnation that lends a fiery orange hue to the central fish.
The float, which was created by Charles Meier of Paradiso Floats, is the first-ever entry to incorporate Augmented Reality (AR). It tells the story of fish swimming upstream in the Yellow River toward the Dragon Gate, where they will be rewarded for overcoming the hardships of their journey by jumping over the gate and transforming into dragons. It features Malaysian pop singer Shila as a rider and a theme song by Emmy Award winning composer Nathan Wang, who is also aboard the float. Both are wearing traditional Chinese clothing.
This is Singpoli’s fifth entry in the annual Rose Parade and its second Sweepstakes Award winner. In 2014 Singpoli was awarded the Extraordinaire Trophy (most spectacular entry); in 2015 the Grand Marshal’s trophy (most creative design); in 2016 the Sweepstakes Trophy (most beautiful entry); and in 2017, the Fantasy Trophy (best display of fantasy and imagination).
